WA Rebates and Feed-in Tariffs

Feed-in tariffs are a long-term incentive mechanism designed by the government to encourage the uptake of renewable energy systems. Net feed-in tariffs work by providing a subsidy based on the amount of energy exported from eligible systems.

Residential

The Western Australian residential net feed-in tariff scheme commenced on 1 August 2010.

Please note: The current scheme has been suspended since Aug 1 2011 as it reached its quota - according to the WA  government. Please visit the Government's website for details.

About the scheme:

The scheme provided eligible residential system owners with a subsidy rate of 40 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh)* for energy exported to the electricity grid. **

System owners received feed-in tariff payments for 10 years or until the property is sold or leased in which case the new owners or tenants receive the payments for the remaining duration. Payments are made as a credit on the electricity account. If the bill is in credit by more than $100 a cheque can be requested. **

The scheme is funded by the State Government and administered by Synergy and Horizon Power. The scheme is reviewed every 3 years or 10MW of new generation to assess the ongoing level of support required. It is proposed that any changes to the scheme will only affect new recipients.

Commercial

At the present time, the WA Feed-in Tariff Scheme only applies to residential customers. The Government recognises that there may be opportunities to use feed-in tariff schemes to support renewable energy investment by commercial enterprises. However, commercial enterprises face different cost structures to households and their investment decisions may reflect different priorities and motivations.
